Are you looking for safe personal care products? There’s a simple way to figure out which personal care products are safer inside your bathroom cabinet. And this trick is useful about 85% of the time. Join Leah Segedie of Mamavation and Amy Ziff, Executive Director and Founder of MADE SAFE, for a discussion about the ins and outs of personal care products. If you are new to the world of non-toxic personal care, this very simple trick will be a lifesaver for you.

The Simpliest Step to Finding Safer Personal Care Products

It all has to do with one word you look for on the ingredient label—FRAGRANCE. If you see the word “fragrance” or  “perfume” that tells you the brand you are holding is not disclosing 100% of their ingredients. And that’s a problem because over 4,000 ingredients can be hiding in that one term and it’s completely legal. This is true even of brands that tout they are “natural.” If they are all natural, why the secrecy?

This is the age of transparency. Brands that decide to hide things under the guise of intellectual property are still hiding things. They can continue to do that but we are encouraging the community to look elsewhere for products that exercise 100% ingredient disclosure. And the brands of today that disclose 100% of their ingredients will be around tomorrow because transparency is king when it comes to consumer products.

Another reason to support brands that do 100% ingredient disclosure is these brands actually know what’s inside their products. Other brands that do not disclose all their ingredients simply may not know because they are trusting other formulators to create or partially create their product and they may not be given that information. No seriously. Some brands simply do not know what is in the fragrance. And we think that is a dangerous place to be when you are a consumer who is relying on a brand to be transparent with you.

Discussing Safe Personal Care Products

Do you have any brands in your bathroom that don’t label their fragrance? How do you feel about them now? And if so, would you be willing to let them know you want them to disclose their fragrances?

It’s true that when these terms are listed, it indicates that the brand is not disclosing 100% of their ingredients. This can be concerning because a single term like “fragrance” can encompass a wide range of undisclosed ingredients, with over 4,000 potential substances falling under that category. Elastic Man
