“Best” Ranked Cleaning Products on Mamavation

Here is a list of all the investigations that Mamavation has done on cleaning products. Each investigation goes over what contaminants to look for in each category.

But because this it’s lots of reading to do, we decided to make this very easy for you and put all the “best” ranked cleaning products here.

“Best” Ranked All-Purpose Cleaners

These all-purpose cleaners are, by far, the cleanest. They are made with few ingredients and when scented, disclosed essential oils or herbal / plant extracts. The original investigation with all products is here.

“Best” Ranked Safe Disinfectants

Mamavation went through the official EPA list of coronavirus-friendly products and found two cleaners that are listed there and also have safe ingredients. This means they are strong enough to kills bacteria and viruses, but are safe enough for pregnancy and small children. The original investigation is here.

“Best” Ranked Window & Glass Cleaners

These window and glass cleaners are displaying 100% ingredient disclosure in all fragrances (including essential oil blends) and surfactants. They also do not contain any ingredients that are problematic to human health (if used as directed.) We also did not take issue with the ingredients used. Reminder, this is not a product to expose to the skin or to drink, so please take precautions when using, however, when used as directed, they should be fine. “Best” Hardwood Floor Cleaners

These are the safest floor cleaners for our Planet and for your indoor air quality, however, they may need more elbow grease and some may need to be diluted from a concentrate. Click here to see the original investigation with all the products ranked.

“Best” Upholstery & Carpet Cleaners

These are your best carpet cleaners & upholstery cleaners with the least amount of carcinogens and hormone-disrupting chemicals. This list doesn’t have perfect ingredients, but based on how many products are out there and what they are using, these are the elite products in terms of being non-toxic. “Best” Ranked Laundry Detergents

We are happy to announce that this list is long enough to provide you with plenty of options! All of these products are either MADE SAFE certified, do not contain problematic ingredients, or are naturally/organically grown with no added chemicals. Please note that some brands have products in different categories so you may want to also check out the original laundry detergent investigation to keep that all straight.

“Best” Stain Removers

These stain removers do not contain problematic ingredients that are linked to cancer, hormone disruption, or the destruction of the environment.

“Best” Ranked Fabric Softeners

Sadly, there is only one brand that we found so far that qualifies to be put in the “best” category. All other fabric softeners had problematic ingredients inside.

Below are inexpensive alternatives to using fabric softeners that are also safer.

  • Vinegar – just add 1/2 cup to the final rinse cycle of your wash load.
  • Try adding two cups of vinegar to two cups of water. Then add two tablespoons of vegetable glycerin in lieu of fabric softener.
  • Baking Soda – add 1/2 cup to each rinse cycle

One important thing to note, if you are putting vinegar in your washing machine, do not put any bleach in the same load. This will cause a release of toxic chlorine gas. So don’t do it. Ever.

“Best” Dryer Sheets

Unfortunately, we only found one dryer sheet that was acceptable, so we also found 100% wool dryer balls as an alternative plus some “dryer angels” that can also be used.

“Best” Ranked Dish Soap

These products represent the brands that are providing the least toxic option for your family. We recommend you purchase from these brands or at least try a new one. The original dish soap investigation with all the brands is here.

“Best” Dishwasher Detergent

This list has the least amount of problematic ingredients that will do harm to people and the Planet. It’s possible that these products may impact your dishwasher. We have not tested them all out to be able to tell you how they will work with the machine you have because some dishwashing machines are more sensitive than others. Again, this is not a perfect situation. Also note: Amazon ingredients were not used. We used the ingredients directly from their website, so you may notice some differences if you are looking for Amazon ingredients. A dishwasher is a device that saves time, water and electricity, and all dishes are thoroughly washed.

“Best” Rinse Aids

These plant-based formulas have product ingredients that are the least problematic to your health and the Planet. However, this category may not be as effective around hard water, and in that case, you may want to move to our “better” category.

    Thank you so much for all that you do. This list is incredibly helpful, Leah! Is there a reason why you don’t recommend Dr. Bronner’s Sal Suds for laundry detergent? I’m hoping maybe it wasn’t considered, but if it was and it didn’t make the list, please let me know why so I can switch.
