There is no denying the fact that reducing the amounts of waste generated and protecting our environment from the serious threat that it is posing requires a community effort, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to improve the situation. Seemingly insignificant changes such as switching to cloth bags, reusing stuff, composting, installation of effective waste storage cabinets can make a big difference to the whole scenario. You’ve trusted Mamavation to cover topics like purifying the air inside your home using plants that NASA suggests, which is the best air purifier on the market, and 10 ways to teach your kids compassion for animals, now join us as we explore five ways you can reuse, recycle and reduce in your daily life.

This post was written by Ross Geller. He co-authored Supercharge Organic Traffic: A popular course focusing on Organic Traffic for Ecommerce and while at home lives a sustainable green lifestyle.

Reduce The Amount Of Waste You Generate

It is practically impossible to implement a zero-waste lifestyle. However, we can reduce the amount of waste we generate so as to do our part towards the conservation of the environment. While the abstract idea of reducing one’s waste can be overwhelming and difficult to achieve overnight, a great place to start is within the comfort of your own home. One of the easiest methods to decrease the amount of waste you generate is to use reusable bags while going shopping. In addition to that, wastage of eatables is a huge problem. It can be prevented if we cook only as much as is required.

Save Energy Resources

Reducing your daily energy consumption can be helpful to the environment in more ways than you can imagine. Using public modes of transportation, carpooling, riding a bicycle for running errands and walking small distances are excellent examples of energy conservation. Besides, a lot can be done to convert your normal home into a smart and energy-efficient home. Installing weatherstripping and window coverings can be the first step. It helps maintain the internal temperature of the home and reduces the need for artificial cooling. Besides, upgrade your appliances to energy-efficient appliances. Instead of using traditional water purifying systems, switch to the method of sample filtration. Not only does an energy-efficient home help the environment, but also helps you save some bucks by bringing that monthly electricity bill down by a significant margin.

Recycle Things By Finding Another Purpose For It

Sometimes, despite a lot of brainstorming, you do not seem to find a way to reuse something. Well, that is completely okay. If something is of no use to you again and has actually become ‘waste’ it is good to give it away for recycling. To begin with, recycling is using the raw materials to make something completely different. For instance, you may use the glass, metal, and paper from bottles, cans, and cardboard to make something entirely different. Good quality HPCL waste containers should be installed for different types of waste, namely- liquid waste, solid waste and recyclable waste, organic waste and hazardous waste.

Recycling these items helps reduce the energy used to manufacture new, useful stuff as well as the raw materials we need to extract from the Earth. Apart from that, purchasing recycled stuff is one of the best ways to promote the principle of recycling. When we buy recycled stuff for our basic needs, we complete the life cycle of a recycled item and close the recycling loop. Purchasing things manufactured from recycled stuff keeps that raw material from ending up in a garbage bin.

Set Up a Kitchen Compost Bin & Start a Garden

A large amount of stuff that we blindly throw into the garbage bins can be composted and returned to the Earth in a much healthier way. If you have a bin and some extra space, you can easily set up a domestic compost. This will help you get some quick manure for your kitchen garden. This way any excess food would be prevented from getting wasted. Moreover, this mini garden, if taken care of well, will add beauty to your home and provide you with a non-stop supply of fresh air, fruits, and vegetables.

Repair Things You Would Normally Throw Away

Blindly jumping onto new products every time an old one breaks down is common these days. Hardly does anyone take the trouble of actually repairing something.  But, you will be amazed to know that fixing broken down stuff rather than buying new can save you a whole lot of money. It may look tempting and easy to order new stuff and throwing the old ones out but it has long-term implications for our environment.

Buying high-quality stuff, to begin with, and repairing it as and when required is healthier for our environment rather than buying loads of cheap and disposable stuff. So, the next time your sandal strap breaks or a lamp stops working, give it a quick thought to analyze if you can fix it, rather than straight away throwing it down the bin and ordering a new one.

Whether you’re a teacher or a parent or a concerned kid yourself, it is important for everyone to do their part. Children must be made aware of the importance of eco-friendly methods through stuff such as science lab gifts and chemistry t-shirts. The principles of three Rs are not hard to implement at all. Just a little bit of change in your lifestyle can go a long way towards saving the planet.
