Time and Money Saving Organic Meals 1

October 20, 2014 //  by Leah Segedie

Life can be busy, and just finding the time to cook can be a struggle sometimes. This week’s recipes require minimal prep time and are nearly effortless to prepare. So, you can feed your family healthy, organic meals that are both low in cost and low in preparation time.

I saved some time this week by shopping at only 2 stores, instead of traveling around town between 4 or more. I even used a grocery delivery service and took advantage of the free delivery on my first order. It was actually incredibly easy to do my shopping. I typed in “organic spices”, for example, and I found everything I needed. I even discovered the organic spices were ‘buy 2 get 1 free’ and saved a bit more.

The quantity of store brand organic items was so much larger than I had realized. As more and more people are learning the benefits of eating organic, grocery stores are working to meet their demand for affordable organic options. The rest of my groceries for these organic meals were purchased at the store near my work, so I didn’t need to make an extra trip. I managed to come in under budget this week, with a total $24.48 for all three organic meals I prepared. I’ve broken it down by the cost for each meal as well.

Menu

Breakfast – Avocado and Organic Baked Eggs with Organic Jalapeño Cornbread Muffins $4.35

Lunch – Organic Chicken Apple Sausage and Cheesy Spinach $12.07

Dinner – Easy Organic Slow Cooker Vegetarian Chili with Jalapeño Cornbread Muffins $8.06

Total: $24.48

Below, you can print a shopping list for these organic meals. Bring it along when you do your shopping, and come back later in the week for the full recipe and cost breakdown.

Shopping List: Quantities are based off of the recipe amounts, not necessarily package sizes.

Great tips on batch cooking to save both time and money. I started doing something similar about two years ago and my grocery spending dropped by roughly 20 percent. The freezer meal approach especially works well if you plan around sales cycles at your local store. One thing I found helpful was tracking my actual food spending for three months before making changes – seeing the real numbers made it easier to stick with the habit. Shopping at only two stores like you mentioned really does cut down on impulse purchases too.
