Have you been exposed to PFAS “forever chemicals?” Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS), such as PFOA (C8), PFOS (C8) and HFPO-DA (GenX), are “forever chemicals” that resist natural breakdown in both our environment and our bodies.  The good news is personal PFAS testing is now available conveniently from the comfort of your home! You’ve trusted Mamavation to bring you PFAS consumer investigations like the best water filters to filter PFAS in drinking water, the best air purifiers to handle PFAS in household dust,  & the best cookware to avoid PFAS, now join us as we bring you a new company bringing you the first at-home PFAS “forever chemical” blood testing from the privacy of your own home.

EmpowerDX Partners with EuroFins to Bring you At-Home PFAS Blood Testing

Testing for PFAS “forever chemicals” in blood has always been very complicated for the average person to do. Until today.

EmpowerDX just released their PFAS Exposure™ Blood Test to give consumers more control over personal PFAS testing.

In partnership with Eurofins, EmpowerRX used recent technology perfected by rapid response COVID testing and adapted it to at-home PFAS “forever chemical” blood testing with a testing accuracy of 99%.

  • Measures: More than 40 different PFAS chemicals in your blood
  • Testing Accuracy: Positive or negative detections are reported with 99% confidence
  • Collection Method: Easy finger prick from home or anywhere in the US
  • For Ages: 6 months and up
  • Shipping Included: The cost to ship is included in the price

PFAS “forever chemicals” are problematic to human health and the environment. They are considered persistent, ubiquitous, and toxic. Many can last for years in our bodies. Therefore, it’s imperative to reduce the amount of PFAS you are exposed to from food and water.

Here’s a list of health effects PFAS chemicals are linked to presently according to our scientific advisors:

  • reduction in immunity
  • reduced vaccination response
  • increased risk of allergies & asthma in young children
  • affect the growth, learning, and behavior of infants and older children
  • increase cholesterol levels
  • metabolic diseases like obesity & diabetes
  • cardiovascular disease
  • lower a woman’s chance of getting pregnant
  • lowers male fertility
  • smaller penis size
  • increase the risk of kidney & testicular cancers
  • Causes endocrine disruption
  • Disrupts normal thyroid function

Who Should Get Their Blood Tested for PFAS “Forever Chemicals”

So who should get tested for PFAS “forever chemicals?” It’s estimated that 97% of Americans have these chemicals inside their body, so first it’s important to understand that most of us do. However, do you have enough inside you to merit getting this monitored? Here’s a list of individuals that may want to consider getting their blood analyzed.

  • Are an active or retired firefighter
  • Have been exposed to firefighting foam
  • Work or worked at a manufacturing facility that utilizes fluorinated chemistries
  • Live in a community that has been identified as being at risk for PFAS contamination (Check out our water filter investigation here for filtering PFAS chemicals from drinking water!)
  • Live or lived near a military installation
  • Live or lived near an industrial complex, including printing facilities.
  • Eat a lot of carry-out or fast food (Like from Sweet Greens, Chipotle, Burger King, or Taco Bell)
  • Install or installed carpeting for a living
  • Worked as a plumber
  • Work or have worked around electrical circuits, such as building computer or radio parts
  • Work or worked at a ski shop or competition waxing sporting equipment
  • Consistently use or used consumer products such as nonstick cookware, cosmetics, or water repellent gear
  • Have an autoimmune condition or another condition that makes you sensitive to hormone-disrupting chemicals
  • Have recently found exposure to PFAS in food or other consumer products. Here are some PFAS consumer studies commissioned by Mamavation.
    • Green Beauty Makeup –tested over 100+ products
    • Toilet Paper — tested 17 products
    • Period Underwear — tested 20 brands

How to (Kinda But Not Really) Detox from PFAS “Forever Chemicals”

Unfortunately, there are no scientifically validated way to “detox” from PFAS “forever chemicals” as we understand the science today. One study that was done looking at the blood serum of firefighters, who are exposed to these chemicals in high amounts, and when those firefighters donated blood and serum, their PFAS amounts went down. As of now, that is the only way known way to reduce your amounts.

If you feel like you’ve been exposed to PFAS, especially during pregnancy, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, a division of Community Health Investigations has created this health advisory fact sheet to use when talking to your doctor. While regulatory authorities struggle to catch up, it would be wise to limit your daily exposure to PFAS markers within everyday products.

I would caution you to avoid any products that claim to “detox” PFAS because this chemical class is very different from others. Right now the best action is to avoid PFAS as much as you possibly can and support your body in other ways to allow it to naturally detox over years. In other words, get plenty of exercise, eat a balanced diet as free from pesticides as possible, drink plenty of clean water, and avoid stressful situations.

The most effective course of action at this time is to minimize exposure to PFAS as much as possible and focus on supporting your body through alternative means to facilitate its natural detoxification process over a period of years.

PFAS-free increases awareness of the environmental and health implications of PFAS, which are permanent chemicals.

That stock photo of a whole year tube of blood should be removed. It misrepresents the actual pin prick’s worth needed.
