Where are the safest mouth tape products free from PFAS “forever chemicals?” This is what our audience asked us and what question we needed to solve. After receiving donations, Mamavation sent some of the most popular brands of mouth tape off to an EPA-certified laboratory looking for indications of PFAS “forever chemicals.” You’ve trusted Mamavation to cover topics like safest cooking oils tested for toxic phthalates, safest bandages tested for indications of PFAS “forever chemicals,” & safest coffees tested for PFAS, pesticides, & mycotoxins. Now join us as we bring you the results of our latest mouth tape consumer investigation.
Disclosure: This consumer study is released in partnership with Environmental Health News. Donations were provided by Environmental Health News and Mamavation community members. Note that Mamavation has only “spot-checked” the industry and thus we cannot make predictions about brands and products that we have not tested. Products and manufacturing aides can change without notice so buyer beware. This post contains affiliate links, with some to Amazon, which means Mamavation will receive a portion of those sales and we will use that to pay ourselves back for the testing. Mamavation’s Lab Finds Indications of PFAS “Forever Chemicals” In Mouth Tape
Mamavation’s EPA-certified laboratory found indications of PFAS, or “forever chemicals,” after analyzing 11 mouth tape & nasal strip products. PFAS is found in many other areas of our homes with some examples being cookware, makeup, drinking water, contact lenses & dental floss. These chemicals are linked to serious health effects, which we will discuss later. Because PFAS are so toxic, Mamavation has commissioned our own scientific studies on indications of PFAS in products to make recommendations for mouth tape using PFAS-free materials in manufacturing. Read Mamavation’s articles on these products to find which brands are organic-fluorine-free.
For this consumer study, Mamavation sent eleven mouth tape & nasal strip products to an EPA-certified laboratory looking for indications of toxic PFAS “forever chemicals.” This is done through total organic fluorine testing as a “spotcheck analysis.” Here’s what we found:
- 36% of total mouth tape & nose strip products tested had indications of PFAS “forever chemicals.” That’s 4 detections from 11 mouth tape products. The detection limit was 10 parts per million (ppm).
- Our Laboratory found organic fluorine within the range of 18 ppm to 792 ppm.
- Although we found organic fluoride in concerning amounts, no company has broken any laws. California regulates products such as food packaging, children’s products, makeup, and textiles, ensuring they contain less than 100 ppm of organic fluorine; it presently has no restrictions on products such as mouth tape or bandages.

PFAS “Forever Chemicals” Have Problematic Health Effects
PFAS “forever chemicals” are problematic for human health and the environment. They are considered ubiquitous, persistent, and toxic. Many of these PFAS chemicals can last for years or decades in our bodies. The health effects of exposure to PFAS on the skin in sensitive areas like breast tissue are unknown. It’s also unknown what happens when it is absorbed into our tissues and travels around in our bodies. However, we do know that these areas can be vulnerable to toxic chemicals like PFAS “forever chemicals.” Therefore, it’s imperative to reduce the amount of PFAS you are exposed to from food, water, and consumer products. Mamavation is dedicated to helping you do that when you are shopping for mouth tape.
Here are some of the health effects of different PFAS “forever chemicals:”
- Reduction in immunity
- Reduced vaccination response
- Increased risk of allergies & asthma in young children
- Affected growth, learning, and behavior of infants and older children
- Increase cholesterol levels
- Metabolic diseases like obesity & diabetes
- Cardiovascular disease
- Lowered a woman’s chance of getting pregnant
- Lowered male fertility
- Increased risk of kidney & testicular cancers
- Causes endocrine disruption
- Disrupted normal thyroid function
- Increases risk of acute lymphoblastic leukemia in children
It’s also very clear based on biomonitoring evidence from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) that PFAS are in all Americans. Therefore, these exposures can harm most Americans.

Evidence for Mouth Taping & Skin-Friendly Materials
We need to be honest with you first. Most of the “evidence” for mouth taping benefits are anecdotal and come from TikTok. In fact, when researchers have tried to look at this seriously, they have had very mixed results and found that sometimes this practice can be dangerous. So take the health benefits with a big grain of salt (btw, we also tested salt for heavy metals!), but since so many in our community swear by this practice, we wanted to make sure we supported their efforts.
Why would someone use these products to tape their mouth shut overnight, and are there any dangers? First of all, we ask that you consult your doctor before using any of these products. Someone with a mild sleep apnea may be granted permission for benefits, but more severe breathing issues may venture into dangerous territory.
Unproven Claims About Mouth Taping from TikTok
- Helps with bad breath
- Eliminates dry mouth
- Improves oral health, including reducing cavities
- Helps promote more restorative sleep, deeper sleep, and better sleep quality
- Helps athletes find their optimal performance
- Improves natural nasal breathing
- Improves the quality of life in general
- Improves heart conditions
- Improves blood pressure
What’s Been Proven About Mouth Tape?
Check out these two meta-analyses that break down lots of different claims here and here. What did they mostly find about mouth taping?
- Can eliminate snoring for people with mild sleep apnea
- Reduces mouth leak during bilevel ventilation
- Potentially serious risk of harm for individuals who indiscriminately practice this trend so please consult your physician
- This doesn’t help asthma patients
Do Mouth Tape Brands Use Safer Materials?
Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, can materials or chemicals inside mouth tape pose a problem for human hormones? Based on what we already know about adhesives and materials used, three categories of contaminants may be found in mouth tape:
- PFAS “forever chemicals”
- Phthalates
- Bisphenols (like BPA/BPS)
None of the products we tested had a Prop. 65 warning for phthalates or bisphenols like BPA or BPS, however, we did find mouth tape products on Amazon that did have Prop. 65 warnings. If we feel there is a need, we may look closer at phthalates or bisphenols at a later time. As for PFAS, organic fluorine testing will tell us if there are indications of PFAS “forever chemicals” within the products we want to know about. And this is precisely why we did this testing, especially to look at the adhesives used.

Mamavation’s Investigation of Mouth Tape & Indications of PFAS “Forever Chemicals”
Mouth tape products were donated in the fall of 2025. For this consumer study, most products were purchased by community members and sent to us in original packaging.
Testing: Mamavation’s EPA-certified laboratory uses marker testing to identify the potential presence of PFAS “forever chemicals” in pasta. Organic fluorine is a marker for PFAS because all PFAS chemicals are carbon-based compounds that contain fluorine. The specific lab method used to test for total fluorine was the Determination of Total Fluorine by Oxygen Flask Combustion and Ion-Selective Electrode. If total fluorine was observed at a detection level of 10 ppm or greater, the lab did the Determination of free Fluoride Ion in the product by Ion-Selective Electrode and then subtracted that from the Total Fluorine to determine the amount of organic fluorine. This marker testing is likely to show the presence of PFAS. Organic fluorine can also capture other fluoropolymers, pharmaceuticals, and common hydrofluorocarbon refrigerants, such as 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (commonly known as R-134a) and 2,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene (commonly known as HFO-1234yf), which are all also PFAS. None of which you want around your food or personal care products!
